Years ago I used to collect MAD Magazine. The one with the boy on the front with the missing front tooth. Well, I have been thinking of that lately, and there is one issue that I quote bits from as it is so funny. It was from 1983, and the main story was “Rehash of the Yeti” – a reworking of “Return of the Jedi“. Here are some of the quotes:
[Lando against the Death Star] “Damn this is a Mickey Mouse operation” with Mickey Mouse sitting in co-pilots seat instead of Nien Nunb.
[Lando against the Death Star] “The only thing we aren’t throwing against them is the kitchen sink …. oh there it is”
Luke: You are my sister
Leia: I know and R2 is my Barstool, and Chewie is my rug, and Han is my distant cousin five times removed
Yoda: When 900 years old you reach, talk as good you will not
And my personal favourite:
Luke: Yoda, I need to know; is Darth Vader my father?
Yoda: One of your parents he is, your mother he’s not
I too was a devoted fan of MAD. During one of the presidential races back in the 1960s, the magazine published an Alfred E. Neuman campaign election kit which I managed to post inside the windows of a vacant storefront on 42nd Street in midtown Manhattan. Together with other MAD articles on then-current issues (e.g., the ICBM arms race), it looked as if this was the candidate’s campaign headquarters. It was fun to stand outside and watch people try and figure out if this was for real or not, but alas, the landlord had it removed after only a couple of days.
Btw, the new theme looks great — much stronger and more vibrant.
Would loved to have seen that.
