Having been a fan of Elite since I played it on the ZX Spectrum over 30 years ago, this book had a lot of work to do to impress me. In the words of a famous smuggler from a different galaxy “I have been from one side of the galaxy to the other” and I have visited many planets and systems.
This book by Drew Wagar started off with a bang and it didn’t let up. The characters are believable, and the locations are described well. At one point someone is referring to things as they used to be, and it was a definite throwback to the original game. The intrigue and twists are very well done and you find yourself holding your breath at points.
It is a fast paced book that hits the ground running. You don’t need to know the game to read the book, it does well as a standalone.
If you like science fiction, this is a definite addition to your library.

Elite was an amazing game, I loved the Blue Danube at the beginning, it was as epic as 2001: A Space Odyssey….landing on the space stations was a bit if a bugger sometimes though.
The new version of it is just as good. Landing is easier now.
I haven’t read a single book through in sooooo long….
I’ll have to have a look see if our library has it.
I just donated about two stones (converted just for you!) to the library that I just was never going to get to.
Cheers, Jules
I have only recently got back to reading. I have put the writing on hold for a bit whilst real life gets in the way. If you like fast paced sci-fi, then this is definitely one to read. Not the same style as Greg Bear and Arthur C Clarke, but their books can be confusing at times. This is the “just when …” type and it is really good for it.
I watched a video with the author, and he said that he never makes his people all bad or all good because nobody is like that. Even someone with the best heart will snap and come out fighting as a destructive force if pushed too far.
I like that…human perspective – always something that can be better or put one over the edge.
There is. Every one you meet has lost their temper at some point or another.
Well said Al, good point. I think if someone is on the brink of extinction, it’s natural to go into fight or flight mode to protect oneself. Even the ‘good’ people can do this because it is survival of the fittest and natural instinct!
